Can I Get Tattooed If I’m Under 18?

Tattoos are much more mainstream than ever. Social media has been a big factor in the huge growth over recent years.  Over the past ten years, the percent of tattooed Americans has almost doubled. Reports from 2021 show around 30-35% of all Americans have at least one tattoo. However, those numbers differ between age groups. Only about 15-20% of those 55+ have a tatt00, around 35% of those 34-54, and about 40% of those 33 and under. These numbers show at least one thing – that tattoos are more popular among younger age groups. At Creative Ink, we’ve been asked a few times: “Can I get tattooed if I’m a minor under 18?”

New Hampshire

Our tattoo studio is based in Keene, New Hampshire. In NH it is illegal to tattoo anyone under the age of 18. This is regardless of parental consent. All clients must give a valid photo ID to tattoo studios in order to verify their age and identity. NH tattoo studios are strict to follow these laws in order to avoid facing penalty or legal action. Penalties can include license revocation or suspension (for artist OR shop), fine up to $2000, and/or guilty of criminal violation for first offense and misdemeanor for any subsequent offenses. In conclusion, NO we cannot tattoo you at Creative Ink if you are a minor under 18.

Vermont

A parent or legal guardian must give written consent for a minor to get tattooed. Parent or guardian must show a valid form of ID. Each tattoo studio may impose additional rules, such as minimum age requirements. Many studios will not tattoo anyone under the age of 16 for a number of reasons. Also, many studios may require the consent of BOTH parents as well as one of both being present during the tattoo.

Massachusetts

Much like Vermont, a parent or legal guardian must give written consent for a minor to get tattooed. However, exact tattoo regulations may differ from one county or town to another. Parent or guardian must be present during the procedure, and will typically have to sign an additional consent form showing proof that they were present for the tattoo process. Parent or guardian must also furnish a valid form of ID, and may be required to present the minor’s birth certificate.

Maine

In the state of Maine, it is illegal to tattoo anyone under the age of 18 regardless of parental consent. All clients must provide a valid photo ID. Many tattoo studios have rules that prohibit minors from even entering their facility, unless for legal piercing procedures. Tattoo studios are strict to follow these laws in order to avoid legal penalty. The penalties for tattooing a minor include but are not limited to fines of $50 to $500 or imprisonment of up to six months.

Conclusion

All things considered, it is possible for minors to get tattooed in some states. However, tattoos are long-term commitment and should be taken seriously. It is not a process that should be rushed into or done illegally, especially by minors. For clarifications on legalities, it is recommended to reach out to your desired tattoo studio directly.
